One of the best parts of studying in Cluj-Napoca is its perfect location for weekend escapes. Romania is full of incredible places to visit, and during my Erasmus experience, I’ve had the chance to explore a few of them. Here are my top adventures so far:
Brașov: The City with a Fairy Tale Vibe
Nestled in the Carpathian Mountains, Brașov feels like stepping into a storybook. With colorful houses, cobblestone streets, and the iconic Black Church, it’s a dream for anyone who loves history or architecture. Plus, the hike to the “Brașov” Hollywood-style sign gives you a breathtaking view of the city below.
Cheile Turzii: Hiking with a View
Just a short trip from Cluj, Cheile Turzii (Turda Gorge) was the perfect getaway for nature lovers like me. The hike took us through stunning limestone cliffs and breathtaking views of the surrounding valley. For a moment, it felt like stepping into a nature documentary. As an added surprise, we found a vintage biplane perched near the entrance of the trail—a quirky and unexpected sight that added a unique twist to the experience.
Timișoara: A Cultural Gem
Known as the “City of Flowers,” Timișoara is one of Romania’s most charming cities. From its beautiful pastel buildings to lively squares like Piața Victoriei, it’s a vibrant mix of history and modernity. Walking through the city felt like a journey through time, and it’s no wonder this place will be the European Capital of Culture in 2025.
Why These Trips Matter
These weekend getaways didn’t just show me Romania’s diverse beauty—they also taught me how much there is to see outside Cluj. Traveling with friends or even alone has been a lesson in flexibility, spontaneity, and appreciating the unknown.
